Stop for a moment and think about your earliest experiences with horses. What drew you to them? What made you desire to want to work with them and own them? Was it their beauty and grace? Their power and strength? Did you read books like the Black Stallion and Lord of the Rings and long to have that kind of a relationship with them? Did words like connection, love, and freedom come to mind?
I’d be willing to bet you weren’t thinking about domination, force, and control but unfortunately those notions have become common place in today’s horse world. People have lost that magical connection with horses and have turned to force and domination in an effort to control them. Methods abound that use the horse’s fear response to evoke certain behaviors. Other methods use gadgets to force a horse into a certain position.
But if we were honest with ourselves, if we truly care about our horses, this isn’t really what we want for them. We want a horse that performs for us willingly, comes running up to us when called, and enjoys being with us. We don’t want to control him, we want to have a partnership with him.
Well I’m going to let you in on a secret- there is nothing magical about this kind of connection. You don’t need to be a famous horse trainer or mystical horse whisperer. This kind of relationship is achievable for anyone!
